Dans un fort de Géorgie, le major Penderton ne s'intéresse plus depuis longtemps à sa femme, qui a pour amant le colonel Langdon. Un jeune soldat, William, va venir perturber un peu plus cet univers trouble. Le major va se sentir irrésistiblement attiré par William, tandis que celui-ci tentera de séduire Leonora.
